NOFI Current Buster in Action: Real-World Oil Spill Incidents
We take great pride in our ability to assist during major oil spills worldwide.
Tobago Oil Spill Incident
In February 2024, the barge MV Gulfstream capsized off the coast of Tobago near Cove Reef, releasing approximately 51,000 barrels of oil. The spill affected around 15 kilometers of coastline, resulting in extensive environmental damage. In collaboration with our partners QT Environmental, T&T SALVAGE LLC, and T&T Group, we provided both equipment and personnel to help minimize the effects of this disaster. Three NOFI Current Busters, supported by NOFI INAK systems, were deployed for containment and recovery operations. Learn more here. and here.
Singapore Oil Spill Incident
In June 2024, a collision between two vessels off the coast of Singapore caused an oil spill that threatened the region's delicate ecosystems. The spill affected areas rich in marine and coastal biodiversity. At least two NOFI Current Busters were used to safeguard these environmentally sensitive zones. The swift and effective response helped minimize the long-term environmental impact, highlighting the importance of advanced oil spill response technology. Read more details here.
Manila Bay Oil Spill Incident
On July 25, 2024, the tanker MT Terra Nova sank in Manila Bay, releasing 1.4 million liters of industrial fuel oil and contaminating approximately 93.74 square kilometers of the bay. Cleanup efforts were led by the Philippine Coast Guard and supported by international agencies, including NOAA. Challenging weather conditions, including a tropical cyclone, complicated the response. One NOFI Current Buster 4, equipped with NOFI INAK, was deployed to support the operations. Learn more here.
NOFO Testing of New Development: NOFI INAK/Frontwing with NOFI Current Buster 6
A full-scale test conducted with NOFO in July 2024 yielded excellent results, though a few minor adjustments are required before the system is market-ready.
The INAK system for the NOFI Current Buster 4 is already available on the market and was successfully used in two real-world incidents in Tobago and the Philippines.
The NOFI INAK system has introduced significant improvements in operational safety and efficiency by eliminating the need for a crane, reducing deck space requirements, and simplifying the deployment and retrieval of the NOFI Current Buster.
The Success of the AllMaritim Hands-On Workshop
In June 2024, AllMaritim hosted a highly successful Hands-On Workshop in Bergen. We were thrilled to welcome 85 participants from 16 nations for an educational and collaborative event focused on oil spill response. A heartfelt thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event such a success!
